Oxalá
is an interjection derived from the Arabic 'Inshallah'. An expression
of hope; perhaps for sunshine, laughter, and another lovely day.
BJ Boulter of Oxalá keeps on hoping.
BJ loves to design and build houses, she also has the travel bug,
and it is easy to find out the reason why. 1961 was the year of
independence for three East African countries, the colony of Kenya,
the Uganda Protectorate, and Tanganyika Territory. Royston and Dorothy
Boulter drove from their home in Bukoba on lake Victoria to Mombasa
and sailed across the seas to a new and hardly less wild environment
in the south of Portugal, the Algarve, settling on the coast at
Praia da Rocha with their seven children. They bought an old inn,
the Solar Penguin and started life anew. The eldest daughter Barbara
Jane (BJ) pursued an artistic career, working in TV and film as
designer and film art director, and eventually as producer. Film
took her all over the world, to Australia, America and the Asian
continent, and eventually gave her the chance in 1985 to return
to her home country, now called Tanzania. In 1988 BJ chose to set
up business in East Africa producing TV commercials and short films.
This gave her the opportunity to explore every corner of this part
of Africa so rich in wildlife, peoples and landscape.
Portugal is once again her home. It has changed a lot since 1962,
tourism, democracy and EEC membership have brought it swiftly into
the 21st century and has become a friendly and comfortable place
to live. She also travels regularly to Kenya and Tanzania to make
TV commercials and documentaries. This gives her ample opportunity
to be where she is happiest, on safari photographing the African
wilderness or just dipping into the warm Indian ocean. The best
of both worlds. |
